About China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda

The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) is the world's largest and most important giant panda conservation facility. Located in the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, the center was established in 1980 and plays a crucial role in giant panda breeding, research, and conservation. Spanning over 200,000 hectares, the center includes multiple research bases, breeding facilities, and natural habitats. The CCRCGP has been instrumental in developing artificial insemination techniques, cub rearing protocols, and reintroduction programs that have significantly contributed to the recovery of the giant panda population. The center houses over 300 giant pandas, including many that were born overseas and returned to China as part of international cooperation agreements. These pandas participate in the center's breeding program, which aims to maintain genetic diversity and support the long-term survival of the species. In addition to its breeding work, the CCRCGP conducts extensive research on panda behavior, nutrition, genetics, and veterinary medicine. The center also collaborates with international partners on conservation initiatives and serves as a training ground for panda conservationists from around the world. The CCRCGP's success in breeding and research has been a key factor in the giant panda's improved conservation status, moving from "Endangered" to "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. The center continues to work toward the ultimate goal of establishing sustainable wild panda populations.
