Where Do Giant Pandas Live?
Explore giant panda habitats, conservation centers, and zoos around the world on an interactive map.
Where Do Giant Pandas Live Today?
Although giant pandas are native to the mountain forests of central China, their conservation story has become global. Through international partnerships, pandas now reside in zoos and breeding centers across the world, serving as ambassadors for wildlife protection and scientific collaboration.
From the Chengdu Research Base in Sichuan to the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington D.C., these facilities are part of a coordinated global effort to protect the species. This map shows every location where pandas are currently housed — a living network of conservation, education, and research.
Key facts: Over 600 pandas live in captivity worldwide, with more than 70 outside China in countries like the United States, Japan, France, and Russia. Click any marker to explore the facility's pandas and conservation programs.
Wild Giant Panda Habitats
In the wild, giant pandas are found only in six mountain ranges in central China's temperate bamboo and conifer forests at elevations between 1,200 and 3,400 meters. These habitats are the species' last remaining strongholds.
Qinling Mountains
Shaanxi Province — home to the brown panda subspecies and an estimated 300 wild pandas.
Minshan Mountains
Sichuan & Gansu — the largest panda habitat, hosting ~720 wild pandas across several nature reserves.
Qionglai Mountains
Sichuan Province — home to the Wolong and Chengdu panda bases, with ~350 wild pandas.
Liangshan Mountains
Sichuan Province — the southernmost panda habitat, hosting ~120 wild pandas.
Daxiangling Mountains
Sichuan Province — a smaller connected habitat with roughly 60 wild pandas.
Xiaoxiangling Mountains
Sichuan Province — the most fragmented habitat, with an estimated 30 wild pandas.
Pandas in Zoos and Conservation Centers
Beyond the wild habitats, giant pandas live in conservation centers and zoos across the globe as part of international partnerships dedicated to research, breeding, and public education.
China
Research bases in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Guangdong house the majority of captive pandas in the world.
United States
Zoos in Washington D.C., San Diego, and Atlanta host long-term breeding and research programs.
Japan
Ueno Zoo and Adventure World in Wakayama have successfully bred pandas for decades.
Europe
Institutions in Austria, Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland participate in the global conservation network.

About This Map
This interactive map visualizes the global distribution of giant panda conservation efforts. Each location represents a facility dedicated to panda research, breeding, or public education.
Interactive map now live: Our map uses Leaflet.js to provide clickable markers, zoom controls, and detailed location information. Click any marker to see which pandas live there and get directions to the facility. We're continuously adding more data and features.
Locations are categorized by their primary mission: breeding centers focus on population growth, zoos on public education, and sanctuaries on rehabilitation.
Coordinates are verified against official sources and updated regularly as new facilities are established or locations change.
Planned features include live panda tracking, visitor information, and conservation status indicators for each location.
