About Wolong Panda Base

The Wolong Panda Base, officially known as the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda's Wolong Base, is located in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province. Established in 1980, it was one of the first specialized facilities dedicated to giant panda conservation and research in China. Situated in the heart of giant panda habitat, the Wolong Base originally focused on rescuing injured wild pandas and conducting field research. Over time, it evolved into a comprehensive conservation center with breeding facilities, veterinary hospitals, and research laboratories. The base played a crucial role in developing captive breeding techniques that have contributed to the species' recovery. In 2008, the original Wolong Base was severely damaged by the Wenchuan earthquake. Following the disaster, the base was relocated and rebuilt with improved facilities at the nearby Shenshuping (η₯žζ ‘εͺ) and Hetaoping (核摃εͺ) sites. These new facilities incorporate modern conservation approaches while maintaining the base's original mission. Today, the Wolong Base continues to be a vital center for panda conservation, housing numerous pandas including breeding pairs and their offspring. The base conducts important research on panda behavior, nutrition, reproduction, and reintroduction techniques, contributing significantly to global efforts to protect this endangered species.
