Jin Zhu (锦竹, studbook #437) was a giant panda born August 12, 1996 at Wolong. Sent to Japan in 2000 as a "male" named Xing Xing, she was recalled in 2002 when keepers discovered she had no penis. Chromosome tests confirmed she was female — a rare case of mistaken identity that took surgery to correct. She went on to give birth to three cubs, including Jin Xin (mother of Qi Zai's son Rong Rong). She died in 2014 during wild training.
