On August 21, 2021, Xiao Qi Ji celebrated his first birthday at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, marking a significant milestone in his development. The "Little Miracle" had grown from a 4.8-ounce newborn to a healthy 45-pound yearling, demonstrating remarkable progress under the care of his mother, Mei Xiang, and the zoo's animal care team. For his birthday celebration, zoo staff prepared special enrichment items including ice cakes made from fruit juice and bamboo, puzzle feeders with treats, and new climbing structures. Xiao Qi Ji showed particular enthusiasm for the ice cakes, spending considerable time licking and pawing at the frozen treats. Throughout his first year, Xiao Qi Ji had developed a playful and curious personality. Zoo staff noted his increasing independence from Mei Xiang, though he still frequently sought comfort and guidance from his mother. His motor skills had improved significantly, with enhanced climbing ability and coordination in manipulating objects. The birthday celebration attracted virtual visitors from around the world via the zoo's Panda Cam, with many sharing messages of congratulations and support for the young panda. Xiao Qi Ji's successful first year represented hope for giant panda conservation and demonstrated the effectiveness of captive breeding programs.
