About Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is one of the oldest zoos in the United States, located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1889, the zoo spans 163 acres and is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It is home to approximately 2,700 animals representing more than 390 species. The zoo's giant panda habitat, known as the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat, is specifically designed to meet the needs of giant pandas. It features multiple indoor and outdoor enclosures, climbing structures, pools, and extensive bamboo groves. The habitat is designed to replicate the natural environment of pandas in China's mountainous regions. The National Zoo has been at the forefront of giant panda conservation since 1972, when the first pandas arrived as a gift from China. The zoo's panda program focuses on research, breeding, and public education. Through successful breeding programs, the zoo has contributed valuable knowledge about panda reproduction, behavior, and conservation. In addition to its panda conservation efforts, the National Zoo conducts research on numerous other endangered species and serves as an important educational resource for millions of visitors each year. The zoo's conservation biology institute works globally to protect wildlife and their habitats.
