On February 15, 2022, Xiao Qi Ji experienced his outdoor habitat for the first time at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. The 18-month-old panda cautiously stepped outside into a light dusting of snow, displaying typical exploratory behavior as he investigated his new environment. Zoo staff had been gradually preparing Xiao Qi Ji for outdoor access, allowing him to observe the outdoor habitat from indoor viewing areas before granting full access. His first outdoor excursion was carefully monitored by animal care specialists who noted his reactions to various environmental stimuli. Xiao Qi Ji showed particular interest in the snow, sniffing and pawing at the white powder before venturing further into the habitat. He explored climbing structures, investigated bamboo stands, and practiced his climbing skills on appropriately sized logs and platforms. Throughout the exploration, he frequently checked back with Mei Xiang, who remained nearby observing her cub's adventures. The successful transition to outdoor access marked an important developmental milestone for Xiao Qi Ji, indicating growing confidence and independence. Regular outdoor time would become part of his daily routine, providing physical exercise, mental stimulation, and exposure to natural environmental conditions.
