Shu Yun (Chinese: 蜀云, studbook number 718) was a male giant panda born on August 5, 2008 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — the same day the Beijing Olympic torch was passing through Chengdu. He and his twin brother Shu Xiang (蜀祥, later known as Kai Kai, gifted to Macau) were named after the auspicious “祥云” (xiang yun, “auspicious clouds”), making them “Olympic Babies.”
His mother was Shu Qing (蜀庆) and his father was Lin Lin (琳琳). His siblings include Yong Yong (勇勇), Shu Lin (蜀琳), and Shu Rong (蜀蓉).
He was described as having a round face, short snout, and slightly short limbs.
Shu Yun was mischievous, active, and a born show-off (顽皮好动,喜欢耍宝). He loved:
On his very first day at Hangzhou Zoo, he amazed visitors by scaling window bars with ease, earning him the nickname “Kung Fu Panda” (功夫熊猫).
On May 27, 2011, Shu Yun and female Ya Lin (娅琳) moved to Hangzhou Zoo’s Panda House. He quickly became a crowd favorite. The zoo held a farewell party for him on September 2013 before his return to Chengdu for breeding preparation. He had grown from 69.8 kg to ~90 kg during his Hangzhou stay.
On May 22, 2014, Shu Yun and half-sister Bei Bei (贝贝) traveled to Qingdao Zoo’s newly built panda house. They debuted on July 1, 2014. However, Shu Yun showed signs of acclimation difficulties (水土不服) and abnormal health indicators, and returned to Chengdu on July 23, 2014 after just two months.
Shu Yun died in 2015 at approximately 7 years of age at the Chengdu Base. The exact cause was not publicly detailed.
