Basic Profile

Bing Xing (Chinese name 冰星, meaning “Ice Star”) is a male giant panda born on September 1, 2000, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan, China. He was born as a twin alongside his brother Bing Dian (冰点). His parents are Bing Bing (冰冰, studbook 314) and Ha Lan (哈兰, studbook 208).

Life Journey

Early Years in China (2000–2007)

After his birth at Chengdu Base, Bing Xing was transferred to Hangzhou Wildlife Park on January 9, 2002, alongside another panda named Cheng Ji (成绩). He resided there until February 12, 2004, when he was moved to Chengdu Zoo. On October 9, 2005, he returned to the Chengdu Research Base.

Move to Spain (2007–2024)

On September 8, 2007, Bing Xing and female panda Hua Zui Ba (花嘴巴) departed for Madrid Zoo Aquarium in Spain as part of the Sino-Spanish Giant Panda Conservation and Research Cooperation Program. The agreement was signed during Spanish King Juan Carlos I’s visit to China in June 2007.

At Madrid Zoo, Bing Xing and Hua Zui Ba became a successful breeding pair, producing six cubs together:

  • De De (德德) and A Bao (阿宝): Twin males born in 2010, returned to China on May 18, 2013
  • Xing Bao (星宝): Male born in 2013, returned to China on September 28, 2017
  • Zhu Li Na (竹莉娜): Female born on August 30, 2016
  • You You (友友) and Jiu Jiu (久久): Twin males born on September 6, 2021

In February 2018, China and Spain renewed their cooperation agreement, extending the pandas’ stay in Madrid until 2023.

Return to China (2024)

On February 22, 2024, Madrid Zoo held a farewell ceremony for Bing Xing, Hua Zui Ba, and their three youngest cubs (Zhu Li Na, You You, and Jiu Jiu). Madrid Mayor Martínez-Almeida and Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing attended. On February 29, 2024, the family departed Spain and arrived in Chengdu, Sichuan on March 1, 2024.
