Short version
Wu Wen (武雯) is a female giant panda born August 11, 2013 at Yaan Bifengxia Base. In April 2017 she traveled to Ouwehands Zoo in the Netherlands alongside Xing Ya as part of a 15-year China-Netherlands conservation agreement. She made history in May 2020 by giving birth to Fan Xing, the first giant panda cub ever born in the Netherlands, followed by a second cub Lang Yue in July 2024.
Wu Wen (Chinese: 武雯, meaning “martial elegance”), studbook number 884, is a female giant panda born on August 11, 2013 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda’s Ya’an Bifengxia Base in Sichuan, China. Her father is Wu Gang (武岗, sb502) and her mother is Gong Zhu (公主, sb477). She was described by her keepers as cheerful, affectionate, and comfortable around her caretakers.
In 2015, during the state visit of Dutch King Willem-Alexander to China, a 15-year giant panda conservation agreement was signed between China and the Netherlands. Wu Wen was selected alongside male Xing Ya (星雅, sb879) as the first pandas ever to reside in the Netherlands.
On April 11, 2017, the pair departed from the Wolong Shenshuping Base in Sichuan, traveling by truck to Chengdu and then aboard a KLM dedicated flight to Amsterdam. Upon arrival, they were transported to Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, where a €7-million Panda Palace (Pandasia) styled after the Forbidden City awaited them. After a month-long quarantine, they made their public debut on May 30, 2017, with Chinese Ambassador Wu Ken and Dutch Agriculture Minister Martijn van Dam attending the ceremony.
On January 18, 2020, Wu Wen and Xing Ya successfully mated naturally. On May 1, 2020, Wu Wen gave birth to a female cub named Fan Xing (梵星, sb1257) — the first giant panda ever born in the Netherlands. The name combines “Fan” (van Gogh, honoring the Netherlands) and “Xing” (from father Xing Ya). Fan Xing returned to China in September 2023.
On July 12, 2024, Wu Wen gave birth again, this time to twin cubs. The larger cub, a female named Lang Yue (朗月), survived and thrived, while the smaller cub sadly did not survive due to congenital issues. Lang Yue made her public debut in January 2025.
Wu Wen continues to reside at Ouwehands Zoo in the Netherlands as of 2026.
