Journey to Denmark

On April 4, 2019, Xing Er and Mao Sun (毛笋) departed for Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark. Danish Minister for Environment and Food Jakob Ellemann-Jensen and Chinese Ambassador to Denmark Deng Ying welcomed them at the airport. A shipment of 500 kg of bamboo accompanied the pandas.

On April 10, 2019, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark officially inaugurated the panda house at Copenhagen Zoo. The facility opened to the public on April 11. The panda house was designed with both indoor and outdoor areas, featuring a distinctive Chinese-inspired architectural style.


Life in Denmark

Xing Er consumes approximately 40 kg of bamboo daily. Keepers monitor his health through regular weighing and fecal observation.

The Great Escape (June 8, 2020)

On June 8, 2020, Xing Er briefly escaped from his enclosure. He was discovered by staff wandering in the park shortly after the zoo had closed. He was safely tranquilized and returned to his enclosure without injury. The incident made international headlines.

Breeding Program

From March 2023, the zoo began introducing Xing Er to Mao Sun for breeding purposes, with both pandas gradually acclimating to each other’s company.
