View profileYa Ya (娅娅), studbook #362, is a legendary female giant panda born on August 24, 1990 at the Chengdu Research Base — the opening day of the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, earning her the nickname "Asian Games Princess." She was one half of the world's first artificially bred twin pandas with her brother Xiang Xiang. Over her career, Ya Ya gave birth to 9 litters and 13 cubs, making her one of the most prolific mothers in panda history. Her children include Yang Yang at Zoo Atlanta, Olympic mascot prototype Mao Mao, and many other breeding contributors. She retired from breeding in 2013 and returned to Chengdu Base in March 2019, where she lives in a quiet retirement.
