Short version
An An (安安, studbook #327) was the longest-living male giant panda in human care. Born wild in Baoxing, Sichuan in 1986, he was rescued and later gifted to Hong Kong in 1999 alongside Jia Jia to celebrate Hong Kong's return to China. An An (Chinese: 安安), studbook number 327, was a male giant panda born in the wild of Baoxing County, Sichuan Province in approximately 1986. He was discovered on October 11, 1986 in Baoxing and rescued by wildlife authorities.
In 1997, following Hong Kong’s return to China, the central government decided to gift a pair of giant pandas to the Hong Kong SAR. An An and female Jia Jia (佳佳) were selected.
On March 11, 1999, An An and Jia Jia arrived at Ocean Park Hong Kong, where they became beloved icons. They made their public debut in May 1999.
An An set multiple longevity records:
In July 2022, An An’s health deteriorated significantly — his appetite and activity levels dropped sharply. On July 21, 2022, Ocean Park veterinarians, in consultation with CCRCGP experts, made the difficult decision to euthanize him to prevent suffering. He was 35 years old.
His legacy includes important research on aging and behavior. A 2024 study based on 422.5 hours of observation revealed that An An instinctively chose energy-efficient paths in his enclosure, mimicking wild panda behavior.
