Short version
Da Shuang (大双, sb453) is a prolific female born 1997-09-01 at Chengdu Base, twin of Xiao Shuang. Daughter of the matriarch Qing Qing (庆庆), she has mothered 8+ cubs including the twins Shuang Xin + Shuang Xi. Known for her wide cheeks and semicircular ears, she is a veteran of the Chengdu breeding program.
Da Shuang (Chinese: 大双, studbook number 453) is a female giant panda born on September 1, 1997 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. She was born as a twin alongside her brother Xiao Shuang (小双). Her mother is Qing Qing (庆庆, studbook 280), one of the most prolific matriarchs in the captive population, and her father is Baoxiong (宝雄, studbook 354).
Da Shuang has a distinctive appearance: wide cheeks, a slightly flat head, and large semicircular ears. She is a calm and experienced mother, known for her excellent maternal care.
As a member of the prestigious Qing Qing lineage, Da Shuang belongs to one of the founding bloodlines of the Chengdu Base breeding program. Her siblings include Er Ya Tou (二丫头), Ya Ya (娅娅), Li Li (莉莉), Qing He (庆贺), and many others.
Da Shuang has given birth to eight or more cubs across multiple litters:
| Year | Offspring | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | Shuang Er (双儿, sb644) | Firstborn, male |
| 2009 | Qi Qi (琪琪) | Female |
| 2011 | Shuang Xin (双欣, sb818) | Female, twin |
| 2011 | Shuang Xi (双喜, sb819) | Female, twin |
| 2014 | Shuang Hao (双好, sb920) | Male, donated blood to save a friend |
| 2016 | Shuang Xiong (双雄) | Male |
Her later cubs were sired by Xiong Hin (雄浜, sb541), a Japan-born male returned to China.
Da Shuang spent most of her life at the Chengdu Base. In March 2018, she was loaned to Suzhou Wildlife Park for exhibition. She returned to the Chengdu Base on March 29, 2022, where she continues to reside in retirement as a veteran breeding panda.
Da Shuang is one of the most successful breeding females of the Qing Qing lineage. Her daughters Shuang Xin and Shuang Xi have continued the family line, with Shuang Xi famously involved in the 2023 Tangshan Zoo incident that raised public awareness about zoo security. Her son Shuang Hao is known for his heroic blood donation that saved a fellow panda’s life.
As a granddaughter of the founding matriarch Mei Mei (美美), Da Shuang represents the fourth generation of the most influential captive panda family in China.
