A Bao

Basic Profile

A Bao (Chinese name: 阿宝, also known as Bao Lan/宝兰) is a female giant panda born on November 3, 2010 at Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. At birth, keepers mistakenly identified her as male and named her after the protagonist of the DreamWorks film Kung Fu Panda. In 2013, when preparing her return to China, a veterinary examination revealed she was female. Her parents are Lun Lun (伦伦) and Yang Yang (洋洋).

Family

A Bao is the third cub of Lun Lun and Yang Yang. Her siblings include:

• Mei Lan (美兰): Brother, studbook 632
• Xi Lan (喜兰): Brother, studbook 673
• Mei Lun (美轮) and Mei Huan (美奂): Twin sisters born 2013
• Ya Lun (雅伦) and Xi Lun (喜伦): Twin sisters born 2016

Life Journey

Atlanta Years (2010-2014)

A Bao lived at Zoo Atlanta until May 2014, when she and her brother Xi Lan were prepared for their return to China.

Return to China (2014)

On May 15, 2014, A Bao and Xi Lan arrived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Breeding Success

A Bao mated on March 20, 2019, and on July 6, 2019, she gave birth to a pair of twins:

• Bao Ge (宝哥, studbook 1185): Male, birth weight 211.6 grams
• Bao Mei (宝妹, studbook 1186): Female, birth weight 209 grams

These twins held the record for the heaviest newborn captive giant panda twins globally.

On June 24, 2021, A Bao gave birth to another son:

• Bao Xin (宝新): Male. Tragically, Bao Xin died on March 14, 2023 from acute severe pancreatitis with multiple organ failure.
