Jing Jing (Chinese: 京京, Arabic: سُهَيْل / Suhail) is a male giant panda born on September 19, 2018, at the Wolong Shenshuping Base. He holds the global studbook number 1166.
His mother is Xi Dou (喜豆, studbook 654), and he has a twin brother Dou Dou (豆豆, studbook 1165) — making them the “twin beans” (豆豆/京京/贰豆).
Jing Jing is described as outgoing and extroverted. He particularly enjoys the water pool in his enclosure and has a hearty appetite for bamboo.
In May 2020, China and Qatar signed a Giant Panda Conservation Research Cooperation Agreement.
On October 19, 2022, Jing Jing and Si Hai departed China for Qatar, becoming the first giant pandas to reside in the Middle East. They arrived at Doha’s Hamad International Airport and were transported to the Al Khor Panda House.
The pandas received their Arabic names: Jing Jing became “Suhail” (苏海尔) and Si Hai became “Thuraya” (索拉雅) — both named after stars in Arabic tradition, symbolizing good fortune, nobility, and infinite value.
On November 17, 2022, just days before the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 kicked off, Jing Jing made his public debut at the Al Khor Panda House, sparking a local “panda fever.” Chinese Ambassador to Qatar Zhou Jian stated that the panda cooperation represented an important consensus between the two countries.
The Al Khor Panda House is a state-of-the-art 120,000-square-meter facility located 50 km north of Doha in Al Khor Park. It features:
Jing Jing adapted well to Qatar, gaining 3-5 kg after arrival. His bamboo is primarily flown in from Sichuan, China.
As of March 2026, Qatari officials confirmed both Jing Jing and Si Hai are in excellent health with stable food supplies and professional care.

From DreamWorks' $1.8 billion Kung Fu Panda franchise to the Beijing Winter Olympics' Bing Dwen Dwen, the panda has become one of the most commercially successful animated characters in history. This article traces the panda's evolution on screen — how a reclusive bamboo-eater became an action hero, a mascot, and a global screen icon.
culture
Long before pandas appeared on stamps, coins, and Olympic mascots, they inhabited Chinese visual culture — tentatively at first, as strange bears in the margins of imperial bestiaries, and then, explosively, as the subject of 20th-century ink paintings, propaganda posters, contemporary installations, and global street art. This article traces the panda's journey through art history: how visual artists across cultures have interpreted, mythologized, and commercialized the panda's image.
culture
A curated global guide to over 50 panda documentaries spanning seven decades, seven thematic categories, and ten countries — from Pan Wenshi's raw Qinling field recordings in the 1990s to the 2024 Korean theatrical release Goodbye, Grandpa. Every film is verified, reviewed, and linked to the real pandas, keepers, and breeding centers behind the footage.
culture
From 'Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan' (symbolizing reunion) to 'Fu Bao' (lucky treasure), every giant panda name carries layers of cultural meaning, political significance, and public sentiment. This article explores the naming traditions, the global naming contests, and how panda nicknames — like Hua Hua's 'Guo Lai' — have become a unique form of modern Chinese internet folk culture.
