Mei Qian (Chinese: 美茜, studbook number 631) is a female giant panda born on August 10, 2006 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Shenshuping Base in Wolong.
Her mother is Xi Xi (茜茜). Her twin sister is Mei Xin (美欣), and her siblings include Rong Rong (融融), Ying Ying (盈盈), Hua Bao (华豹), Ya Mei (雅美), Yun Duo (云朵), Yun Er (云儿), and Zhuang Zhuang (壮壮).
Mei Qian is described as naturally solitary (天生孤僻) — she prefers to be alone, is highly competitive, and always wears a stern, unapproachable expression (严肃和拒人千里之外的表情). Despite this, she has been a successful mother and even appeared in multiple film and television productions.
After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Mei Qian was transferred to Yunnan Wildlife Park alongside two other pandas. She lived there for several years, celebrating her birthday at the park in August 2012.
In April 2014, she returned to Sichuan, settling first at the Dujiangyan Base and later moving to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base in 2015.
On July 27, 2021, Mei Qian gave birth to a female cub weighing 249 grams at the Wolong Hetaoping Base — the heaviest captive giant panda newborn on record at that time (the record was broken in 2022). The cub was named Lin Xi (林溪).
