Basic Profile

Shuang Xi (Chinese: 双喜, studbook number 819) is a female giant panda born on August 9, 2011 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, weighing 136 grams. Her twin sister is Shuang Xin (双欣, studbook 818).

Her mother is Da Shuang (大双), a prolific female born in 1997. She has many siblings including her twin sister Shuang Xin (双欣), as well as Shuang Er, Shuang Qing, Shuang Hao, Shuang Xiong, and Qi Qi.

Nicknamed “Big Head Xi” (大头喜), she is known for her gentle temperament and excellent climbing skills.


The “iPhones 6” Group

In 2013-2014, Shuang Xi, Shuang Xin, together with He Qi, He Mei, Er Qiao, and Ai Li, formed the famous “爱疯六” (iPhones 6) group at the Chengdu Base’s juvenile enclosure. The six cubs were a major attraction.


Life Journey

  • 2018-05-08: Loaned to Tangshan Zoo alongside Mei Hin (梅浜) for a 3-year exhibition

Tangshan Incident (2023)

On March 18, 2023, a male tourist illegally entered Shuang Xi’s outdoor enclosure and attempted to interact with her. Security staff intervened, and the man was taken away by police. The incident prompted the zoo to strengthen security measures and raised public awareness about safe panda viewing practices.


Personality

Shuang Xi is described as gentle and well-tempered (性格温顺). She is an excellent climber, often found scaling the structures in her enclosure. Her distinctive large head (hence the nickname) makes her easily identifiable among her siblings.
