Ya Ao (雅奥, studbook #583) was a male giant panda born August 13, 2004 at Wolong Hetaoping Base. Son of Gong Zhu, he was named after the Athens Olympics (雅奥 = 雅典奥运). He lived at Shanghai Wildlife Park from 2006 to 2022, becoming the zoo's star panda and a beloved "internet celebrity." Nicknamed "the cutest uncle," he died on March 4, 2022 from post-surgery complications after treatment for intestinal obstruction.
