Short version
Bing Dian (冰点, studbook #520) is a male giant panda born September 1, 2000 at the Chengdu Research Base. He weighed just 58 grams at birth — the lightest panda cub in the world at that time. Twin brother of Madrid's Bing Xing, he is known for his distinctive habit of drooling constantly, leaving a ring of white foam around his mouth.
Bing Dian (Chinese: 冰点, “Freezing Point”), studbook number 520, is a male giant panda born on September 1, 2000 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. He is the twin brother of Bing Xing (冰星, studbook 519) — the Madrid male.
At birth, he weighed just 58 grams — the lightest newborn panda cub in the world at the time. His survival was a testament to the base’s neonatal care capabilities.
Bing Dian has a distinctive and somewhat endearing quirk: he drools constantly. A ring of white foam perpetually surrounds his mouth, giving him a slightly absent-minded appearance that has become his trademark.
On June 25, 2001, with Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympics reaching a critical stage, Guangdong SIPO Stainless Steel Co. adopted Bing Dian and renamed him “Pan Ao” (盼奥) — “Hopeful for the Olympics” — as a symbol of support for the Olympic bid.
On September 11, 2008, Bing Dian was sent to Luoyang Wangcheng Zoo for public education exhibitions. He returned to the Chengdu Research Base on March 20, 2012, and was moved to Chengdu Zoo on April 28, 2016.
