Short version
Ya Ao (雅奥, studbook #583) was a male giant panda born August 13, 2004 at Wolong Hetaoping Base. Son of Gong Zhu, he was named after the Athens Olympics (雅奥 = 雅典奥运). He lived at Shanghai Wildlife Park from 2006 to 2022, becoming the zoo's star panda and a beloved "internet celebrity." Nicknamed "the cutest uncle," he died on March 4, 2022 from post-surgery complications after treatment for intestinal obstruction.
Ya Ao (Chinese: 雅奥, studbook number 583) was a male giant panda born on August 13, 2004 at the CCRCGP Hetaoping Base in Wolong, Sichuan.
His mother was Gong Zhu (公主, studbook 477), one of the most prolific mothers in the captive breeding program. He had 12 siblings, including Ge Ge (格格), Jun Zhu (郡主), Li Li (丽丽), Bi Li (比力), Huan Huan (欢欢), Zhu Ling (竹灵), Zhu Hai (竹海), Yun Yun (运运), Shan Hu (山虎), Wu Wen (武雯), Xian Xian (贤贤), and Qi Qi (七七).
Born during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, his name “雅奥” combines “雅典” (Athens) and “奥运” (Olympics) — commemorating the global sporting event.
On April 1, 2006, Ya Ao moved to Shanghai Wildlife Park alongside two other pandas, Rong Rong (融融) and Tong Tong (佟佟). He became the park’s resident star, spending the next 16 years there as its longest-serving panda.
Known for his gentle, easygoing nature, he became one of Shanghai’s most beloved animals — an “internet celebrity panda” with fans who affectionately called him “the cutest uncle” (最奶萌的大叔).
In February 2022, Ya Ao’s health declined rapidly:
His death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, with Shanghai Wildlife Park issuing a public statement honoring his 16 years of companionship and the deep bond between the panda and his keepers.
