Short version
Lan Tian (蓝天, "Blue Sky") was the first giant panda conceived through artificial breeding to survive at the Wolong Hetaoping Base. His birth on August 12, 1986 ended a decade-long breeding drought at Wolong's predecessor facility, marking the breakthrough that would establish China's captive panda breeding program.
Lan Tian (Chinese: 蓝天, “Blue Sky”) was the first artificially-bred giant panda cub to survive at the Wolong Hetaoping Base, born on August 12, 1986. His birth marked the end of a ten-year period during which Wolong’s breeding facility had failed to produce a single surviving cub through artificial methods.
The breakthrough was achieved by a research team led by Lai Binghui (赖炳辉) and others, who had been working to solve the challenges of captive panda breeding — including estrus detection, artificial insemination timing, and neonatal cub care.
Lan Tian’s survival proved that Wolong’s artificial breeding techniques were viable, paving the way for the center to become the world’s most successful giant panda breeding institution. The achievement was recognized by China’s Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Construction as a special breeding成果, and the techniques developed through his birth were later applied to panda loan programs worldwide.
Wolong’s deputy director Li Desheng has cited Lan Tian’s case as a demonstration of China’s breakthrough in artificial panda breeding technology.
