Short version

Lao Lao (捞捞, studbook #1076) is a male giant panda born July 8, 2017 at Wolong Shenshuping Base. Twin of Hai Hai, son of Lin Bing. He was adopted by Haidilao (海底捞) hotpot chain in August 2017 — the company named the twins "Hai Hai" and "Lao Lao" after their brand. In 2019, he moved to Yangzhou Zoo, becoming a beloved local star. Known for his round face and outgoing, playful personality — keepers describe him as a handsome "handsome帅小伙."

Basic Profile

Lao Lao (Chinese: 捞捞, studbook number 1076) is a male giant panda born on July 8, 2017 at the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center.

His mother is Lin Bing (林冰, studbook 740) — the first panda born in Thailand. His twin sister is Hai Hai (海海). His half-siblings through Lin Bing include Wen Hui (文惠), An An (安安, #1183, now in Hong Kong), Wu Lin (武林), and Du Du (嘟嘟).

Haidilao Adoption

In August 2017, just one month after the twins’ birth, Haidilao (海底捞) — China’s famous hotpot chain — visited the CCRCGP and adopted both cubs. Drawing inspiration from their brand name (海 = sea/hai, 捞 = scoop/lao), they named the female “Hai Hai” (海海) and the male “Lao Lao” (捞捞). The names perfectly captured the brand’s identity while giving the cubs memorable names.

Life at Yangzhou

On September 27, 2019, Lao Lao was transferred to Yangzhou Zoo (扬州茱萸湾动物园) alongside another panda, Yue Liang (月亮). He has lived there ever since, becoming one of the zoo’s most popular residents.

Personality

Lao Lao is described as outgoing, lively, and playful (性格外向活泼调皮). He loves exercise and rolling around, and has a round, handsome face that fans adore.

Care Routine

His keeper Jiang Feng has developed a close bond with Lao Lao through daily health checks — examining tongue color, teeth, activity levels, and reactions. The keeper keeps detailed records in green and blue notebooks. Lao Lao has been trained to accept抚摸 (petting) to prepare for future medical blood draws.

Summer Care

Lao Lao dislikes heat. When temperatures exceed 30°C, his indoor enclosure runs 24-hour air conditioning at ~25°C. Keepers provide:

  • Fruit-flavored ice blocks made from peaches, watermelon, carrots, and honey water
  • A private pool for soaking
  • Food placed in “beehive” feeders to encourage movement

His bamboo is airlifted from Zhejiang and Sichuan.

Birthday Parties

  • 6th Birthday (2023): Celebrated at Yangzhou
  • 7th Birthday (2024): Themed party with fruit and wowotou feast
