Short version

Lin Hui (林惠) was a female giant panda born September 28, 2001 at Wolong's Hetaoping Base. She lived at Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand from 2003, becoming a beloved cultural icon across Southeast Asia. In 2009 she gave birth to Lin Bing, the first giant panda born in Southeast Asia. She passed away on April 19, 2023 from multi-organ failure caused by atherosclerosis. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief in Thailand.

Basic Profile

Lin Hui (Chinese name: 林惠, studbook number 523) was a female giant panda born on September 28, 2001 at the Wolong Hetaoping Wild Training Base in Sichuan, China. Her parents were Pan Pan (盼盼, studbook 456) and Tang Tang (唐唐, studbook 434), and her littermate brother was Lin Yang (林阳).

Journey to Thailand

On October 12, 2003, Lin Hui was sent to the Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand alongside male giant panda Chuang Chuang (创创) as part of a Sino-Thai Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Program. Their arrival marked a major milestone in Sino-Thai diplomatic relations.

Life at Chiang Mai Zoo

Lin Hui quickly became the most beloved animal in Thailand, drawing millions of visitors to Chiang Mai Zoo. Her gentle temperament and playful demeanor made her a national celebrity. The zoo’s panda exhibit became one of the most popular attractions in Northern Thailand.

Motherhood

On May 27, 2009, Lin Hui gave birth to a female cub — Lin Bing (林冰, studbook 716) — the first giant panda ever born in Southeast Asia. The birth was a landmark achievement for the Sino-Thai cooperation program. Lin Bing was later returned to China in 2013.

In 2017, Lin Hui showed signs of pregnancy but ultimately absorbed the fetus, a known biological phenomenon in giant pandas.

Health Concerns

In 2014, Lin Hui’s teeth were found to be abnormally磨损 (worn) with sharp edges and exposed pulp. Zoo officials, after consulting Chinese experts, attributed the condition to genetics, noting her brother Lin Yang displayed similar dental issues. Despite ongoing monitoring, her overall health remained stable until early 2023.

Death and Investigation

On April 18, 2023, a live stream captured Lin Hui showing signs of distress — nosebleeds and blood on her neck. Zoo veterinarians and Chinese experts provided emergency care remotely. She died on April 19, 2023 at approximately 22 years of age.

A joint Sino-Thai autopsy determined the cause of death as multi-organ failure caused by atherosclerosis with embolism. The nosebleeds were attributed to a nasal cavity hemangioma (benign vascular tumor). Thai insurance paid a claim of 15 million Thai baht (approximately 3 million RMB).

The Chinese government subsequently debunked online rumors that Lin Hui had been beaten to death, confirming the natural cause of death through pathological examination of 50+ tissue samples.

Legacy

Lin Hui remains a powerful symbol of Thailand-China friendship. A memorial was held at Chiang Mai Zoo, and her death was widely mourned across both countries. She is remembered for her gentle nature, her role in advancing giant panda conservation in Southeast Asia, and her historic contribution to panda breeding outside of China.
