Qing Xiao (Chinese: 庆小, studbook number 986), nicknamed “Dian Dian” (点点), “Qing Xiao Bao” (庆小宝), and “Stone Goblin” (石头精), is a male giant panda born on September 16, 2015 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, weighing 150 grams.

His mother is Qing He (庆贺, studbook 537) and his twin brother is Qing Da (庆大/启启). His father is Xiong Bin (雄浜), the first Japanese-born returned panda. His sister is Xi Xi (茜茜).

Appearance: Heart Ears and Worry Face

Qing Xiao is instantly recognizable by:

• Heart-shaped ears (心形的耳朵) — his ears curve inward at the top, forming a heart shape
• Innate worried expression (委屈脸) — his facial structure gives him a permanent “wronged” look, earning him the nickname “Qing Wei Qu” (庆委屈)
• White belly with black “tie” (白肚皮黑领带) — a distinctive marking pattern
• “High-waisted black stockings” (高腰黑丝) — his black leg markings are unusually high

He also has a famous habit of lying flat on rocks (石头趴), often蜷缩 his body into a tight ball.

Qing Xiao became an online sensation for his adorable, perpetually worried face. Fans created countless memes featuring his expressions. He was also appointed a UNDP Panda Ambassador (联合国开发计划署形象大使), using his fame to promote wildlife conservation.

Childhood Antics

As a cub, Qing Xiao was famously bullied by his older siblings but grew up to become a feisty “warrior.” He was known for:

• Trying to nurse from his brother Qing Da
• Offering massages to the famous Meng Lan (萌兰) in hopes of becoming his sidekick
• “Fixing” his foster aunt Ke Lin (科琳) so thoroughly that she fled
• Suckling on keepers’ clothes well past weaning age
