Short version
Shun Shun (顺顺) was a male giant panda born October 11, 2019 at the Chengdu Research Base. Twin of Liu Liu, he was one of the "late panda cubs" — the first pair in a decade to miss the annual group debut. He and his sister died 9 days apart in May 2020 from an unprecedentedly severe allergic reaction to medication, marking the first documented case of its kind in captive panda medicine.
Shun Shun (Chinese: 顺顺) was a male giant panda born on October 11, 2019 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. His mother was Xiao Ya Tou (小丫头) and his twin sister was Liu Liu (溜溜). He weighed 176.6 grams at birth — the larger of the pair.
He and Liu Liu were the first panda cubs in ten years to miss the annual public group debut, earning them the nickname “the late panda cubs” (迟到的熊猫幼崽).
On April 26, 2020, Shun Shun and Liu Liu developed acute diarrhea and stopped eating. During treatment, they suffered severe, repeated allergic reactions — the first such cases documented in captive giant panda history. Despite consultations with top human hospital specialists and 24-hour ICU-level care, Shun Shun died from multi-organ failure on May 20, 2020, nine days after his sister.
