Short version

Wen Li (文莉, studbook #761) is a female giant panda born July 19, 2009 at the Chengdu Research Base. She and her twin sister Ya Li were the first panda twins born anywhere in the world after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake — a symbol of resilience. They were lifelong adopted by Coca-Cola in 2010 and renamed "Le Le" (乐乐). She later spent three years on loan at Guangzhou Zoo and is the mother of three.

Basic Profile

Wen Li (Chinese: 文莉, adopted name Le Le/乐乐), studbook number 761, is a female giant panda born on July 19, 2009 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Li Li (莉莉).

Twin Sister

Wen Li’s twin sister is Ya Li (雅莉). Together, they hold a unique distinction: they were the first giant panda twins born anywhere in the world following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Their birth was widely covered in Chinese media as a symbol of hope and resilience in the aftermath of the disaster.

Life Journey

Coca-Cola Adoption (2010)

On March 24, 2010, Wen Li and Ya Li were lifelong adopted by the Coca-Cola Company. The adoption ceremony included a public naming event, where the twins were given the new names “Le Le” (乐乐) and “Mei Mei” (美美) — “Joy” and “Beauty” — symbolizing positive and beautiful lives. The adoption was part of Coca-Cola’s broader conservation sponsorship program.

Guangzhou Loan (2013–2016)

On July 12, 2013, Wen Li and Ya Li traveled to Guangzhou Zoo for a three-year exhibition. Their journey was a production in itself:

  • They flew from Chengdu with VIP treatment throughout — green通道 at both airports
  • A supply of apples and bamboo accompanied them on the flight
  • Guangzhou Zoo had spent two months renovating the panda enclosure, installing five large air conditioners and a misting cooling system
  • A dedicated keeper from Chengdu accompanied them as a “super nanny”

The transition diet was carefully managed: the zoo started with two weeks’ worth of Sichuan bamboo before gradually transitioning to local varieties.

Return and Motherhood (2016–present)

Wen Li returned to the Chengdu Base in January 2016. She has given birth to three cubs:
