Short version

Wu Jie (武杰), known in Singapore as Kai Kai (凯凯), is a male giant panda born September 14, 2007 at Wolong. He arrived at Singapore's Mandai River Wonders on September 6, 2012 alongside Jia Jia. After seven breeding attempts over six years, he fathered Singapore's first panda cub Le Le on August 14, 2021. His loan was extended to 2027.

Basic Profile

Wu Jie (Chinese: 武杰, known internationally by his Singapore name Kai Kai / 凯凯, meaning “victorious”), studbook number 687, is a male giant panda born on September 14, 2007 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda Wolong Breeding Center. His father is Xiong Bang (studbook 438) and his mother is Wu Wen (studbook 482).

Arrival in Singapore

On September 6, 2012, Kai Kai and his mate Jia Jia (嘉嘉, studbook 861) arrived in Singapore on a 10-year conservation loan from China. Singapore became the ninth country to receive panda loans from China.

For their arrival, Mandai Wildlife Reserve built a dedicated Giant Panda Forest enclosure at River Wonders (formerly River Safari), a specially climate-controlled facility maintaining temperatures between 18–22°C and humidity at 50–60% year-round to simulate the pandas’ native Sichuan habitat.

Their names — Kai Kai (凯凯, “victorious”) and Jia Jia (嘉嘉, “beautiful”) — were selected from over 1,000 entries submitted in a nationwide naming contest.

Breeding Journey

Kai Kai and Jia Jia’s breeding journey became a national story in Singapore. Female pandas have only one reproductive cycle per year, with fertility lasting just 24–36 hours.

2017Third attempt — failed

Kai Kai underwent specialized strength training to improve breeding success, including “squat” exercises to build hind-leg strength and a “crab walk” regimen to improve endurance and mating positioning. He was nicknamed “Mr Onion Head” by keepers for the distinctive tuft of fur on his head.

Fatherhood

On August 14, 2021, at 7:50 AM, Jia Jia gave birth to Singapore’s first giant panda cub, weighing approximately 200 grams. The cub, named Le Le (乐乐, studbook 1300), was conceived through a combination of natural mating and artificial insemination.

The successful birth was described as a “significant milestone” by Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated the team, noting the “difficult and rare accomplishment” after six years of persistent effort.

Later Years

In 2022, Kai Kai and Jia Jia’s loan agreement was extended for another five years, ensuring the pandas would remain at Mandai River Wonders until at least 2027. Kai Kai turned 15 in September 2022.

Kai Kai is described by his keepers as initially a private eater who would retreat to a quiet spot to dine alone, but over time became more outgoing and comfortable in front of visitors. He is trained for dental X-rays and cooperates with routine health checks.

Impact

Kai Kai, Jia Jia, and Le Le have attracted over 7.6 million visitors to Mandai River Wonders from around the world. The panda program has also led to the publication of more than 30 research papers and multiple technical exchanges between Chinese and Singaporean wildlife management experts.
