Ya Pu is a male giant panda born on January 1, 1988, in wild giant panda habitat in the Qinling Mountains of China, with his birth range initially recorded as spanning the Minshan and Qionglai mountain systems in early conservation documentation. He is formally registered as studbook number 348 in the global giant panda studbook managed by international giant panda conservation coordination bodies. His parentage is not formally documented in studbook records, as both of his parents were unregistered wild individuals native to the Qinling Mountains, a distinct subpopulation of giant pandas noted for unique genetic and morphological traits. He was taken into human care shortly after birth as part of targeted wild giant panda rescue and monitoring efforts active in the region in the late 1980s.

On January 1, 1989, Ya Pu was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, where he has resided continuously since. As one of the earliest wild-born giant pandas integrated into China’s national captive conservation breeding network, his early care and monitoring contributed to foundational research on the adaptation of wild-born giant pandas to captive settings. Researchers documented that Ya Pu exhibited more pronounced territorial defense and wild-type foraging behaviors compared to captive-born conspecifics in the center’s population, observations that informed later husbandry protocols for both rescued wild pandas and captive-born individuals prepared for wild release.

Ya Pu participates in the center’s long-term captive breeding and behavioral research programs, and his wild-derived genetic material has expanded the genetic diversity of the captive giant panda population, a core goal of the species’ ex situ conservation strategy. His decades-long residency in the captive program has provided continuous, multi-decade behavioral and physiological data that has supported the refinement of species recovery strategies for the giant panda, which was reclassified from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2016.
