Short version
Da Bai Tu (大白兔), nicknamed "Pa Pa Tu" (趴趴兔), is a female giant panda born on 2010-07-02 at Beijing Zoo. Daughter of Gu Gu and Ying Hua, she gained online fame for her fair, water-colored cub photos. She is the mother of Ji Nian, Ji Qing, and Bai Jun.
Da Bai Tu (Chinese: 大白兔, “Big White Rabbit”), studbook number 766, is a female giant panda born on July 2, 2010 at Beijing Zoo. She is the daughter of Gu Gu (古古, sb496) and Ying Hua (瑛华, sb566). Her name translates to “Big White Rabbit,” and she is affectionately nicknamed “Pa Pa Tu” (趴趴兔, “Tummy-Down Bunny”) for her childhood photos lying flat on the ground.
Da Bai Tu earned her online following through a set of baby photos showing her fair, translucent white fur — a look that fans described as “water-colored” and “sweet.” One particular photo of her sprawled flat on her belly (“趴趴兔” pose) went viral, establishing her as an internet-favorite panda at Beijing Zoo.
Her personality is both lively and mischievous, earning her the nickname “Liu Mang Tu” (流氓兔, “Rascal Bunny”) alongside the gentler “Pa Pa Tu.”
Da Bai Tu belongs to the prominent Pan Pan lineage through her father Gu Gu:
Her twin sister died shortly after birth after being accidentally crushed by their mother Ying Hua, who was raising a firstborn cub at the same time.
Da Bai Tu was born at Beijing Zoo on July 2, 2010. Because her mother Ying Hua chose to raise the firstborn cub and Beijing Zoo had not had a successful panda pregnancy since 2007, there was no available colostrum. Days after birth, Da Bai Tu was airlifted to Sichuan for foster care — a common practice for Beijing Zoo cubs in need of specialized nursery conditions.
On July 6, 2011, after turning one year old, Da Bai Tu returned to Beijing Zoo, where she grew up alongside her close friend Xiao Bai Tu (小白兔, “Little White Rabbit”) — a similarly-aged panda born at CCRCGP who was also fostered. Though often confused for sisters, the two are not biologically related.
In February 2017, Da Bai Tu was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) as part of the national breeding program. She moved through multiple CCRCGP bases:
On May 29, 2019, she gave birth to twins — a male named Ji Nian (吉年, sb1169) and a female named Ji Qing (吉庆, sb1170) — becoming the first successful mother of the 2019 breeding season at CCRCGP. Both cubs were fathered by Lu Lu (芦芦, sb503).
After weaning her cubs, Da Bai Tu continued living at the CCRCGP bases. She gave birth to a third child, Bai Jun (白君), on July 31, 2023. In 2025, she was moved to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base, where she currently resides.
Her eldest son Ji Nian departed for Beijing Zoo in September 2025, returning to the city of his mother’s birth.
