Basic Profile

Er Shun (Chinese: 二顺), studbook number 676, is a female giant panda born on August 10, 2007, at the Chongqing Zoo in Chongqing, China. Her father is Ling Ling (灵灵) and her mother is Ya Lao Er (娅老二). She comes from a large family — her siblings include You You (友友), Mang Zai (莽仔), Hao Qi (好奇), Ding Ding (丁丁), and Liang Yue (良月).

Journey to Canada

On March 25, 2013, Er Shun departed China aboard a FedEx charter flight alongside male giant panda Da Mao (大毛) as part of a 10-year Sino-Canadian conservation partnership. The pair arrived at the Toronto Zoo in Ontario, Canada, with the arrangement facilitated by Canadian-Chinese celebrity Dashan and the sister-city relationship between Chongqing and Toronto.

Offspring

First Litter (Toronto Zoo)

In May 2015, Er Shun underwent artificial insemination using frozen sperm from male panda Qiu Bang (秋浜). On October 13, 2015, she gave birth to Canada’s first giant panda twins — a male and a female. The cubs were named Jia Panpan (加盼盼) and Jia Yueyue (加悦悦) following a public naming competition in March 2016. Jia Panpan (studbook 987) and Jia Yueyue (studbook 988) returned to China in January 2020.

Move to Calgary

In March 2018, Er Shun and her family relocated to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada. She underwent another artificial insemination attempt in April 2019 but did not become pregnant.

Return to China

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting fresh bamboo shipments, Er Shun and Da Mao returned to China early on November 29, 2020, arriving at Chengdu before continuing to the Chongqing Zoo.

Second Litter (Chongqing Zoo)

On July 22, 2022, Er Shun gave birth to a second set of twins at Chongqing Zoo — a male and a female. The cubs were named Yu Ke (渝可, male, studbook 1284) and Yu Ai (渝爱, female) through a public vote in March 2023. Their father is Qing Qing (青青).

Er Shun currently resides at the Chongqing Zoo, where she continues to participate in the national giant panda conservation breeding program. Her offspring Jia Panpan lives at the Chengdu Zoo, Jia Yueyue moved to the Chongqing Zoo in January 2024, and Yu Ke and Yu Ai remain at the Chongqing Zoo alongside their mother.
