Basic Profile
Ji Mei (Chinese: 绩美, studbook number 1003) is a male giant panda born on June 27, 2016 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
His father is Mei Lan (美兰, studbook 649) — the famous Atlanta-born panda — and his mother is Ji Li (绩丽, studbook 697). His twin sister is Ji Lan (绩兰).
Personality
Ji Mei is described as lively, active, and bold (活泼好动, 胆子大) — in contrast to his more reserved sister.
Journey to Nanning
On December 13, 2019, Ji Mei arrived at Nanning Zoo in Guangxi. On January 15, 2020, he and Ji Lan officially moved into the zoo’s panda pavilion — a facility designed for the subtropical climate with year-round temperature control below 25°C.
Ji Mei adapted quickly, completing his acclimation within three months. His bamboo is flown in fresh from Chengdu.
Birthday Celebrations
- 4th Birthday (2020): Summer-themed ice cake with watermelon and strawberries
- 6th Birthday (2022): Celebrated with sister Ji Lan
- 8th Birthday (2024): Large party with custom cake, photo exhibition, and panda mascot performances
Current Status
As of 2025, Ji Mei’s exhibition loan agreement with Nanning Zoo has concluded, and his future placement is under coordination with the Chengdu Base.
