Short version

Mao Zhu (Chinese: 毛竹) is a female giant panda born on July 26, 2014 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Mao Mao (毛毛) — the panda whose graceful form served as the prototype for “Jingjing” (晶晶) , one of the five 2008 Beijing Olympic mascots. Her father is Xiong Hin (雄浜) , the first surviving giant panda born in Japan to be returned to China.
Her sister is Mao Sun (毛笋) .
In September 2014, Mao Zhu was featured in the world’s first live-streamed panda cub growth broadcast. A public naming contest followed, with “毛竹” (Mao Zhu) selected from thousands of submissions — the name continues her mother “毛毛” (Mao Mao)‘s naming pattern.
On November 17, 2016, Mao Zhu and another panda, Zhen Duo (珍多), were transferred to Yunnan Wildlife Park — the first sub-adult pandas ever housed in Yunnan Province. The zoo built a specially designed habitat with simulated forest and bamboo种植 areas.
Starting in 2021, Yunnan Wildlife Park has held annual birthday events for Mao Zhu:
