Meng Meng

Basic Profile

Meng Meng (Chinese: 梦梦) is a female giant panda born on July 10, 2013 at 20:22 local time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. She holds the global studbook number 868. Her birth weight was 105 grams.

Her father is Yong Yong (勇勇) and her mother is Er Ya Tou (二丫头). She has siblings including Xiao Ya Tou (小丫头), Xing Rong (星蓉), Xing Ya (星雅), Er Xi (二喜), and Er Qiao (二巧).

Personality

Meng Meng is described as having a round face and short muzzle. She has a gentle temperament, loves to show off, and is very photogenic. Among her sisters, she was considered the most beautiful and adaptable.

Before Berlin

In January 2016, Meng Meng, along with Qian Qian (茜茜) and Sa Er (仨儿), was loaned to Shanghai Wildlife Park. She returned to Chengdu Base on January 14, 2017.

Journey to Berlin

On June 24, 2017, 4-year-old Meng Meng and 7-year-old Jiao Qing departed for Berlin Zoo, beginning a 15-year Sino-German conservation cooperation. In 2017, she was awarded the “Most Popular Overseas Panda” Gold Award.

Motherhood

First Litter (2019)

In August 2019, Meng Meng was confirmed pregnant. On September 1, 2019, she gave birth to twin males — the first giant pandas ever born in Germany:

• Meng Xiang (梦想): 186g, 00:52 AM
• Meng Yuan (梦圆): 136g, 01:43 AM

The 100-day naming ceremony was held on December 9, 2019. Both cubs returned to China in December 2023.

Second Litter (2024)

On August 22, 2024, Meng Meng gave birth to twin females:

• Meng Hao (梦好): 169g
• Meng Tian (梦甜): 136g

Named on December 6, 2024, they continue to live with their mother at Berlin Zoo.
