Shun Shun

Shun Shun, a male giant panda with the Chinese name 顺顺, was born on June 1, 2018 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and is registered under global giant panda studbook number 1170, a record maintained by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is the offspring of Tu Zi and Ya Li, two captive-bred giant pandas that are long-term residents of the Chengdu Research Base. His father Tu Zi has sired multiple cubs as part of coordinated captive breeding programs designed to support the long-term viability of the species. Shun Shun was raised by his mother at the Chengdu Research Base through his early developmental stages, in line with standard captive rearing protocols established for giant pandas, until he reached sub-adulthood.

On June 1, 2019, his first birthday, Shun Shun was transferred to Fuzhou Panda World, a public exhibition and conservation education facility in Fuzhou, where he currently resides. As part of the national ex-situ conservation network for giant pandas coordinated by China’s national wildlife conservation authority, he contributes to the managed captive population of the species, a core component of global giant panda conservation efforts. His presence at Fuzhou Panda World supports the facility’s dual mandates of public outreach and captive population management.

Shun Shun exhibits typical behavioral traits of his species, spending the majority of his daytime hours feeding on bamboo and resting. He has become a popular attraction for both local residents and out-of-town visitors to Fuzhou Panda World, serving as an accessible ambassador for giant panda conservation that helps raise public awareness of habitat protection and species preservation efforts. His birth also adds to the genetic diversity of the global captive giant panda population, a key factor in maintaining the health and long-term sustainability of the captive cohort, which functions as an important safeguard against population decline in wild giant panda habitats.
