Short version
Xi Xi (茜茜, studbook #889) is a female giant panda born on August 14, 2013 at the Chengdu Research Base. Named because her birth fell on the eve of the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day), she is nicknamed "Xi Xi Princess." She lived at Shanghai Wildlife Park (2016-2017) and has resided at Hohhot Daqingshan Wildlife Park since 2018 alongside Sa Er.
Xi Xi (Chinese: 茜茜), studbook number 889, is a female giant panda born on August 14, 2013 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her name was inspired by the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s Day) — since she was born on its eve, keepers chose “Xi Xi” (phonetically similar to “夕夕” meaning “eve”) and gave her the nickname “Xi Xi Princess” (茜茜公主).
Her mother is Qing He (庆贺, studbook 557).
On February 2, 2016, Xi Xi traveled to Shanghai Wildlife Park alongside two other female pandas — Meng Meng (梦梦) and Sa Er (仨儿). The trio was called the “Three Sisters” and debuted during Chinese New Year. Xi Xi was described as the largest of the three but the most timid, with a distinctive deep V-shaped shoulder patch and the longest snout.
She returned to the Chengdu Base on January 4, 2017.
On April 19, 2018, Xi Xi and Sa Er moved to Hohhot Daqingshan Wildlife Park in Inner Mongolia — the first giant pandas to settle in Hohhot. On August 14, 2024, the park held an 11th birthday celebration for Xi Xi featuring a special watermelon cake and fruit decorations.
Xi Xi’s early development was documented in the book “I Grew Up — The Story of Xi Xi” (我长大了——大熊猫茜茜成长故事), a photo diary recording her journey from cub to sub-adult.
