Xi Xi (Chinese: 喜喜, meaning “Double Happiness”) is a female giant panda born on June 23, 2019 at Chongqing Zoo. Her mother is Mang Zai (莽仔) — one of the zoo’s most successful breeding females and the mother of the famous Mang Cancan (莽灿灿). Her twin sister is Qing Qing (庆庆).
On June 23, 2019, something extraordinary happened at Chongqing Zoo: two female pandas gave birth to twins on the same day — a first in the zoo’s 60-year history.
A global naming contest was launched, and the four cubs were named through public voting — together becoming the “Four Treasures” (四宝) or more affectionately, the “Four Happy Meatballs” (四喜丸子). The names 双双、重重、喜喜、庆庆 together form “双重喜庆” (Double Happiness Celebration).
The Four Meatballs became internet sensations for their creative enrichment activities. Under the careful design of their keepers, they have been seen:
These staged interactions delighted visitors and became viral hits on social media.
Xi Xi was cared for by zoo staff 24/7 during her early months, growing from a tiny cub to a healthy weight of 4,013 grams by her 100-day checkup. She and the other three cubs were exhibited at the nursery during scheduled viewing hours.
