Short version
Xing An (兴安, studbook #1090) is a male giant panda born July 30, 2017 at the Wolong Shenshuping Base. Grandson of San Diego's famous Bai Yun and Gao Gao, he is better known as "Zhen Bu Gao Xing" (珍不高兴) — "Truly Unhappy" — for his permanently grumpy expression: puffed cheeks, knit brows. He lives at Fenghuang China Panda Garden since 2020.
Xing An (Chinese: 兴安, nicknamed Zhen Bu Gao Xing/珍不高兴, Pang Zai Zai/胖崽崽, Qi Gu Gu/气鼓鼓), studbook number 1090, is a male giant panda born on July 30, 2017 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Wolong Shenshuping Base.
His mother is Zhen Zhen (珍珍, studbook 558), who was born at the San Diego Zoo. His grandparents are the legendary Bai Yun (白云) and Gao Gao (高高) — two of the most famous pandas in overseas conservation history. Through them, Xing An carries the bloodline of one of the most successful breeding lineages in the global panda program.
Xing An’s defining feature is his expression. He has a large head, round black eyes, and a tendency to purse his lips in a way that makes him look perpetually displeased. His cheeks puff out. His brow furrows. When he sits still — which he often does — he radiates the energy of someone who has just received deeply disappointing news.
Fans adore this about him. His nickname “珍不高兴” (Zhen Bu Gao Xing — “Truly Unhappy” or “Zhen’s Unhappy One”) has become his brand. Social media posts of his grumpy face regularly go viral.
On May 30, 2020, Xing An was transferred to the Fenghuang China Panda Garden in Hunan Province, where he currently resides. By his 5th birthday in 2022, he weighed 124 kg and was presented with a special summer-themed cooling cake.
