Chen Xing

Basic Profile

Chen Xing (Chinese name: 辰星, studbook number 1344), also known as Bai Feng (白峰), is a male giant panda born on August 19, 2020 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Sichuan Province, China. His name, Chen Xing, means “morning star” — symbolizing brightness and the pursuit of light and progress. He is known to be lively and energetic, with a particular talent for climbing trees and playing in water.

Family

Chen Xing is the son of Tai Shan (泰山, studbook 595) and Xiao Bai Tu (小白兔). Tai Shan was born in 2005 at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington D.C. and returned to China in 2010. Chen Xing has a twin sister named Bai Xue (白雪).

Journey to Malaysia

As part of a new 10-year China-Malaysia giant panda conservation and research collaboration agreement signed in April 2025, Chen Xing and his companion Xiao Yue (晓月, sb1350) were selected to travel to Malaysia. On November 18, 2025, the pair departed from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport aboard a charter flight, accompanied by Chinese keepers and veterinarians. They arrived in Kuala Lumpur the same evening and were transported to Zoo Negara Malaysia (马来西亚国家动物园).

Prior to departure, Chen Xing completed a 30-day quarantine period and received a comprehensive health examination including X-rays and ultrasound. All health indicators were normal. During the flight, he was supplied with fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, specially formulated steamed bread (wotou), and drinking water.

The Malaysian government completed a renovation of the panda exhibit at Zoo Negara in October 2025, expanding indoor activity spaces and adding climbing facilities. The zoo has three dedicated bamboo plantations, five专职 keepers, and four veterinarians assigned to the pandas’ care.

Public Debut

On January 10, 2026, Chen Xing and Xiao Yue officially made their public debut at Zoo Negara Malaysia in a ceremony attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other dignitaries.
