Xiao Yue

Basic Profile

Xiao Yue (Chinese name: 晓月, studbook number 1350), also known as Xing Yi (星怡), is a female giant panda born on September 29, 2020 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) — specifically at the Wolong Shenshuping Base in Sichuan Province, China. Her name, Xiao Yue, means “dawn moon” — symbolizing purity and gentleness like the bright moon. She has a gentle, quiet temperament and is somewhat shy and introverted. Her slightly rounded build reflects her reputation as a devoted food enthusiast.

Family

Xiao Yue is the daughter of Lan Zai (兰仔, studbook 592) and Shu Qin (淑琴, studbook 756). Her twin brother is Xing Qiu (星秋), who was sent to Adelaide Zoo in Australia. Her notable relatives include older sister Qin Xin (琴心), who participated in a wild release training program, and Shan Zhu (山竹).

Journey to Malaysia

As part of a 10-year China-Malaysia giant panda conservation and research collaboration agreement signed in April 2025, Xiao Yue and Chen Xing (辰星, sb1344) were chosen to represent China in Malaysia. On November 18, 2025, they departed from Chengdu with a full supply of fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, fruits, and vegetables, arriving in Kuala Lumpur the same evening.

Before departure, Xiao Yue completed a 30-day quarantine and comprehensive health check. Zoo Negara Malaysia had upgraded its panda facilities in October 2025 with expanded indoor space and new climbing structures. The zoo maintains three dedicated bamboo plantations growing the pandas’ preferred bamboo species.

Public Debut

On January 10, 2026, Xiao Yue and Chen Xing officially met the public at Zoo Negara in a ceremony attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. They are reported to particularly enjoy bamboo from the state of Negeri Sembilan.
