Long Xin (Chinese: 龙欣, studbook number 516) is a female giant panda born on August 18, 2000 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base in Wolong, Sichuan. Her name “龙欣” (Long Xin) means “Dragon Joy.”
Her father is Pan Pan (盼盼, studbook 308), the legendary sire whose descendants comprise a significant portion of the captive population. Her mother is Lei Lei (雷雷, studbook 374), a wild-born female known for her exceptional maternal instincts.
Long Xin is Lei Lei’s firstborn daughter. Her siblings include Yuan Yuan (圆圆, sb488) — the panda sent to Taipei Zoo — and You You (友友, sb537).
Long Xin is one of the most prolific mothers at CCRCGP. She began breeding in 2005 and has produced 13 offspring across multiple litters, including multiple sets of twins.
Through her son Yuan Xin, she is the grandmother of Fu Bao (福宝), the first giant panda born in Korea — making her a celebrated figure in the international panda community.
Long Xin survived the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which devastated the Wolong Hetaoping base. She was transferred to the Ya’an Bifengxia base on June 24, 2008, along with other pandas, and gave birth to a set of twins on July 21, 2008 — just weeks after the disaster.
In 2015, she moved to the Wolong Shenshuping Base.
In 2023, she was transferred to Fengtongzhai Dengchigou in Baoxing County — returning to the very region where her wild mother Lei Lei was rescued decades earlier. The Dengchigou site is operated as the Panda International Traceability Camp, highlighting Baoxing’s significance as the birthplace of giant panda discovery.
