Short version
Ping Ping (坪坪) was a wild female giant panda found on November 17, 2014 in Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve with a severe abdominal wound — her belly torn open, intestines exposed. Despite emergency surgery and intensive care, she died 8 days later from systemic infection and extreme malnutrition. Her body had no fat reserves left.
Ping Ping (Chinese: 坪坪) was a wild female giant panda, estimated to be approximately 3 years old, discovered on November 17, 2014 in the Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve in Sichuan during a routine winter ecological survey.
She was found with a severe abdominal wound — her belly had been torn open, exposing her intestines. The injury may have been caused by a fall from a tree or an encounter with another animal.
On November 20, experts from the Chengdu Research Base performed emergency surgery lasting over two hours, successfully repairing the wound. She was kept at the reserve for recovery.
However, her condition deteriorated. On the evening of November 20, she was rushed to Chengdu — a 6.5-hour journey. Upon arrival, she was so weak she could barely stand, walked a few steps, and collapsed.
Veterinarians found:
Despite conservative treatment, she suffered multiple shocks. On November 25 at 5:00 AM, she went into critical condition and died at 12:41 PM.
Necropsy revealed: hemorrhagic necrosis of the surgically repaired intestinal segment,全身 infection leading to septicemia, severe liver damage, and extreme malnutrition — her body had depleted all fat reserves.
