Short version

She is the first giant panda born in Japan to survive to adulthood. Together with her mate Yong Ming, she produced 10 cubs, making her one of the most prolific mothers in the global captive panda population. Basic Profile

Rau Hin (Chinese name: 良浜, also romanized as Liang Bin, studbook number 515) is a female giant panda born on September 6, 2000 at Adventure World in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. She is the daughter of Ha Lan (哈兰, studbook 208) and Mei Mei (梅梅, studbook 408), and was the first giant panda born in Japan to survive to adulthood.

Life Journey

The First Japan-Born Panda

Rau Hin’s birth marked a milestone in the Sino-Japanese panda cooperation program. She was the first cub born at Adventure World to survive, paving the way for the facility’s renowned “Hin Family” (浜家族) — the largest overseas panda family.

Mate and Motherhood

Rau Hin was paired with the male Yong Ming (永明, studbook 390, also known as Ei Mei), one of the most successful breeding males in the global captive population. Together they produced 10 cubs:

  • 2008: Twin — Mei Hin (梅浜, female) and Ei Hin (永浜, male) — the first second-generation pandas born overseas
  • 2010: Twin龙凤胎 — Kai Hin (海浜) and You Hin (阳浜)
  • 2012: Yu Hin (优浜) — female (single cub)
  • 2014: Twin — Sakura Hin (樱浜) and Tao Hin (桃浜)
  • 2016: Jie Hin (结浜) — female
  • 2018: Cai Hin (彩浜) — female (born at only 75g, the smallest cub at Adventure World)
  • 2020: Fū Hin (枫浜) — female

Her remarkable reproductive record made her an “Heroic Mother” (英雄母亲), and her 10 offspring made her one of the most prolific females in the global captive panda population. All cubs were conceived through natural mating, as Adventure World prioritized natural breeding methods.

Awards and Recognition

In 2011, Rau Hin was awarded the title of “Wakayama Knight” (和歌山骑士) by Wakayama Prefecture, receiving the “Meritorious爵” (功勋爵) medal. She was celebrated as a “Sino-Japanese Friendship Envoy” (中日友好特使).

Return to China

On June 28, 2025, as the Sino-Japanese cooperation agreement expired, Rau Hin returned to China aboard a charter flight along with three of her daughters — Jie Hin, Cai Hin, and Fū Hin. A farewell ceremony attended by approximately 3,500 people was held at Adventure World, co-organized by the park and the Chinese Consulate General in Osaka. After her return, Adventure World’s visitor numbers dropped by approximately 50%.
