Short version
Shuhin (秋浜, studbook #574) is a male giant panda born on September 8, 2003 at Adventure World, Japan. He and his twin brother Ryu Hin made history as the first giant panda twins naturally nursed by their mother in captivity. Son of Eimei (永明, sb390) and Mei Mei (梅梅, sb408), he returned to China in 2007 and has lived at the Shenzhen Safari Park since 2017, where he is affectionately known as "Uncle Qiu" (秋大爷).
Shuhin (Chinese: 秋浜, also known as Qiubin), studbook number 574, is a male giant panda born on September 8, 2003 at Adventure World in Shirahama, Wakayama, Japan. He weighed approximately 190 grams at birth with a body length of 17 cm. His father is Eimei (永明, studbook 384) and his mother is Mei Mei (梅梅, studbook 480).
He and his twin brother Ryu Hin (隆浜, studbook 573) became the first giant panda twins in captivity to be successfully raised through natural nursing by their mother.
Shuhin was born as part of the “Hama Family” (浜家族) lineage at Adventure World. By June 2004, he had grown to 19.35 kg. He lived at Adventure World with his brother until their return to China.
On October 28, 2007, Shuhin and Ryu Hin returned to China together, becoming the first overseas-born twin giant pandas to be repatriated. After a three-month quarantine at the Chengdu Research Base, they were moved to public exhibit on January 29, 2008.
On April 7, 2017, Shuhin was transferred to the Shenzhen Safari Park in Guangdong Province. He lives there alongside the male panda Yuan Zhou (园舟). Since his arrival, the park has held annual birthday celebrations for him every September, with the 9th edition taking place in 2025.
Shuhin is known for his calm and endearing personality. During bamboo shoot season (March to May each year), fresh bamboo shoots are a particular favorite. Japanese fans have continued to visit him in Shenzhen, and he still responds to Japanese language commands.
Shuhin has fathered 4 offspring and has 8 grandchildren.
Shuhin maintains a dedicated following among Japanese panda enthusiasts. In June 2018, a group of Japanese fans traveled specially to Shenzhen to visit him. The Japan Giant Panda Conservation Association regards him as an important cultural bridge between Japan and China.
