Xing Bao was born on August 30, 2013 at the Madrid Zoo Aquarium in Spain, the third cub born through the Sino-Spanish Giant Panda Conservation Program. His name was chosen through an online public vote — “星宝” means “Star of Madrid” (马德里的宝贝), symbolizing his special status as Spain’s panda treasure.
He was the first male panda cub born in Spain to survive to adulthood — a milestone for European panda breeding. Before him, the only surviving European-born panda cub was Zhu Lin (竹琳), who was preserved as a specimen.
During his cubhood, Xing Bao received a special visit from Queen Sofia of Spain, who came to personally see Spain’s newest panda star. The visit was widely covered in Spanish media and cemented Xing Bao’s status as a beloved national figure.
Under the international panda cooperation agreement, overseas-born pandas must return to China before sexual maturity. On September 26, 2017, Xing Bao departed Madrid in an emotional farewell.
“Xing Bao is like a little angel who fell to earth. Separating from him breaks my heart — he will be my eternal treasure.” — Rebecca, Xing Bao’s keeper at Madrid Zoo
Spanish fans and media gathered at the zoo to see him off. He flew to Chengdu first, before being assigned to his permanent home.
On April 13, 2018, Xing Bao arrived at Guiyang Qianlingshan Park Zoo (贵阳黔灵山公园) in Guizhou Province, where he lives alongside Kai Hin (海浜) — another overseas-born panda from Japan’s Adventure World.
The panda house covers over 10,000 m² with a professional care team available 24/7. Guiyang’s excellent ecological environment provides abundant fresh bamboo and bamboo shoots.
In August 2023, Xing Bao celebrated his 10th birthday at the zoo, showing excellent health and a hearty appetite for bamboo.
