Short version
Ye Ye (晔晔, studbook #495) is a female giant panda born September 25, 1999, at Wolong Hetaoping Base. She is the elder sister of Gu Gu (古古, sb423) and the mother of 10 cubs, including Hua Yan (华妍, sb888) — the fifth captive-born panda successfully released to the wild. Ye Ye (Chinese: 晔晔, studbook number 495) is a female giant panda born on September 25, 1999 at the Wolong Hetaoping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP).
Her mother is Tang Tang (唐唐, sb446), a wild-born panda from Pingwu. Her father is Xin Xing (新星, sb329). She is the elder sister of several well-known pandas including Gu Gu (古古, sb423), Lin Hui (林惠, sb533), Lin Yang (林阳, sb539), Long Hui (龙徽, sb528), and Ju Xiao (菊笑, sb533-invalid).
Ye Ye was born and raised at Wolong’s Hetaoping Base. She was transferred to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base on June 24, 2008, shortly after the Wenchuan earthquake, as part of the relocation of pandas from the damaged Wolong facilities.
On May 21, 2013, Ye Ye was moved to the Wolong Hetaoping Wild Training Base to participate in the rewilding breeding program. Her experience raising cubs in semi-wild conditions made her an ideal mother for the program.
On April 19, 2016, she was moved to the Wolong Shenshuping Base. After a brief transfer back to Bifengxia on March 15, 2017, she returned to Shenshuping on April 13, 2017, where she currently resides.
Ye Ye is a prolific mother with 10 recorded offspring:
Her daughter Hua Yan was released into the wild on October 20, 2016, as part of China’s first dual-female panda release at Liziping Nature Reserve. In 2024, trail cameras captured Hua Yan mating with rewilded male Tao Tao (淘淘, sb777), confirming successful integration into the wild population.
