Yue Yue (Chinese: 月月, studbook number 1052) is a male giant panda born on October 4, 2016 at Shanghai Zoo. He and his twin sister Ban Ban (半半) were the first panda twins born in East China (华东地区).
His mother is You You (优优, studbook 474), making him a member of the famous Ying Ying family.
On his 200th day, he was officially named “月月” through a public vote. “月” takes the homophones of “越” (surpass) and “悦” (joy). Together with his sister’s name “半,” the pair “月半” echoes the sound of “panda.” At naming, he weighed 14.7 kg and measured 65 cm.
Yue Yue is described as outgoing, active, and adventurous — he loves exploring, climbing, and has a strong ability to adapt to new environments. He contrasts with his sister Ban Ban’s more refined “贵妃坐” style.
On October 4, 2017, Shanghai Zoo held a celebration featuring a traditional “抓周” (choice ceremony), panda dance performances, and a custom birthday cake. Thirty twin families attended the预热 events. Yue Yue weighed 29 kg at one year old.
